About Alamogordo

A town of more than 35,000 in the southern part of the state, about 70 miles north of the state's southern border with Texas, Alamogordo, New Mexico, is the county seat of Otero County. The town, whose name comes from a Spanish word meaning "fat cottonwood," lies about 90 miles north of El Paso, Texas, and east of the massive Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands National Monument. It was founded in 1898, when the El Paso and Northwestern Railroad extended there, and has flourished since.
