The charming town of Somers is located in Westchester County in the southeastern tip of New York. Somers has a friendly population of about 20,000 residents and is conveniently serviced by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, which provides transportation to the Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. When the town was founded in 1788, it was given the name Stephentown, but due to confusion with another New York town with the same name, Stephentown was renamed Somerstown. Later, in 1808, the name was shortened to Somers, which was taken in honor of Richard Somers, a naval captain from New Jersey who was killed in the Tripolitan War.
The town of Somers is also known as the “cradle of the American circus” because it was once home to the famous elephant “Old Bet.” “Old Bet” was owned by Hachaliah Bailey, who bought the elephant and intended to use her for farm work. However, “Old Bet” became a major attraction and so Bailey formed the modern circus. When “Old Bet” died on tour in 1827, Bailey built the Elephant Hotel in her honor, and in 1927, the hotel was purchased by the town and it remains a National Historic Landmark to this day. Other popular attractions in Somers include the Angle Fly Preserve, Lake Lincolndale, Ladson Park and Arboretum, Muscoot Farm, Old Stone House, and the Reis Park and the Wright Reis Homestead.
