Tappan is a quaint hamlet situated in Rockland County in southeastern New York and has a population of about 7,000 residents. Tappan is located within the Town of Orangetown. The community was first established in 1691, after the establishment of the first County Courthouse. Later, in 1711, the community’s first school house was built. The community has a rich history that includes George Washington using the DeWint House in Tappan as his headquarters four times during the American Revolution. One of Tappan’s most historic and prominent establishments is the Old ’76 House. Originally known as “Mabie’s Inn”, the tavern was often used as a meeting place throughout the American Revolution and has served customers and travelers for more than three hundered years. Other popular attractions in Tappan include Andre Monument, the Bartow-Samett Town House, Cardona House, DeWint House, Bogert-Haring House, the Manse, Reformed Church of Tappan, the Village Church Green, Tappan Tar Barrel Elm site, and the Tappantown Historical Society.
