Tarrytown is one of the beautiful villages that make up the town of Greenburgh, which is located in Westchester County in southeastern New York. The community is just northwest of the White Plains along the Hudson river, and is a northern suburb of New York City. Along with the neighboring villages of Irvington and Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown forms a region known as “Sleepy Hollow Country,” which was made famous by author Washington Irving, who resided in the area and whose home, “Sunnyside,” is now preserved as a shrine.
The community was first settled by the Dutch in the 17th century and was developed as a river port. The Hudson River Railroad eventually extended into the area in 1849, and in 1870, Tarrytown was incorporated. The village’s economy consists of publishing, pharmaceutical research, and tourism. Tarrytown is home to educational institutions including Marymount College and Lyndhurst. Tarrytown is a small, charming community that offers a peaceful small town atmosphere and appearance.
