About Thornwood

Situated in southeastern New York, Thornwood is an unincorporated hamlet located in the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County. Thornwood has a friendly population of about 7,000 residents. Thornwood was once centered around a large and thriving marble quarry, but the quarry pit was eventually filled in the late 1980’s and the Town Center shopping center was constructed over it. The village is also home to a train depot that was once a part of the Harlem Line of the Metro-North Railroad, which provided a 48 minute ride to the Grand Central Terminal. However, the railway was electrified in the mid 1980’s, and the process made the construction of an electrified railway in Thornwood impractical.

One of the largest establishments in Thornwood is the North American headquarters for the Carl Zeiss Corporation, which is a multinational German manufacturer of optical system and other related products. Thornwood is also home to the Legionaries of Christ, a Roman Catholic organization.
