Ticonderoga is a charming, unincorporated town and village located in Essex County, northeastern New York. The town is situated at the north outlet of Lake George, where it drains into Lake Champlain. The town was built in an area that was once a Native American settlement, and Ticonderoga’s name is derived from the Iroquois word, “cheonderoga,” which means “between two waters,” or “where the waters meet.” The area was once home to Fort-Carillon, which was a French fort built on Lake Champlain in 1755, but in 1759, the fort was captured by the British during the French and Indian War, and it was renamed Ticonderoga. Today, the fort has been converted into a museum and is now a popular tourist attraction.
Ticonderoga was officially incorporated in 1889, but then disincorporated in 1993. The town’s economy is based primarily on tourism, although the paper and pulp industry also play a role. Nearby mines once was a major source of crystalline graphite in the United States. Ticonderoga is also serviced by a small, municipal airport and an Amtrak railway system. A YMCA, several beautiful parks, and several bodies of water located in Ticonderoga offer great outdoor and recreational services.
