About Tonawanda

The city of Tonawanda is located adjacent to the city of North Tonawanda, and together, they are known as twin industrial cities. Tonawanda is situated in Erie and Niagara counties in western New York, and it lies at the junction of the New York State Canal System and the Niagara River. The city also forms part of the Buffalo urban complex. The area was first settled in 1823, when laborers arrived in the area to begin work on the Erie Canal. In 1836, the Tonawanda Township was separated from Buffalo, and in 1854, Tonawanda was declared a village. In 1903, Tonawanda received its city charter, while North Tonawanda, which was separately incorporated, became a city in 1897.

One of the first major industries to make up Tonawanda’s economy was the lumber trade, but as time passed, new industries, including the hydroelectric power business from Niagara Falls were introduced into the city. The city now manufactures sponges, pumps, abrasives, safety equipment, tires, and aircraft instruments. Both the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum and Tonawanda Indian Reservation are located in the area.
