About Utica

The beautiful city of Utica is the county seat of Oneida County in central New York. With a population of about 62,000 residents, Utica is situated along the Mohawk River and the New York State Canal System. The city is also conveniently located only 45 miles east of Syracuse. The first people to settle in the region where Utica is currently located were Dutch and Palatinate Germans. In 1758, the British established Old Fort Schuyler. Although Utica was destroyed by an Indian raid in 1776, the village was rebuilt and connected by stagecoach to Albany, as well as by river to Schenectady.

Utica was officially incorporated as a village in 1798, and it gained its name because it was drawn from a hat. During its early days, Utica developed as a textile-industrial center, but today, the city’s economy consists of the manufacture of medical and surgical equipment, wood furniture, jewelry boxes and desk accessories, textile reinforcements for tires, as well as power transmissions for aerospace technology. Even though the city is surrounded by dairylands and truck farms, Utica is home to the Mohawk Valley Community College, and the Utica College of Syracuse University, as well as the New York Institute of Technology. A museum is also located in the city at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute. Other major establishments include the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center, the Masonic Home and Health Facility, and several other hospitals, all of which provide excellent health care for Utica’s citizens.
