About Valley Cottage

The hamlet of Valley Cottage is situated in Rockland County in the eastern district of the Town of Clarkston. Valley Cottage has a population of about 10,000 residents and is located in southeastern New York. The first person to settle in Valley Cottage was John Ryder, who owned a large farm that consisted of most of the land where the community’s school district is now located. The area was first established when the area’s first post office was built in the Valley Cottage Station in 1892. The community gained its name during the time when the West Shore Railroad was expanding through the area in 1887. The residents decided to name the community Valley Cottage, in reference to the house nearest the train station. This house was often referred to as “that cottage in the valley.”
