Wading River is a small hamlet located in Suffolk County on the border between the Town of Brookhaven and the Town of Riverhead. Wading River has a population of about 7,000 residents and lies along the North Shore of Long Island. The hamlet gained its name from the Native American name of the area, Pauquaconsuk, which means “the place where we wade for thick, round-shelled clams.” The area was first settled in about 1671, but it was not until 1947, that the hamlet really began to develop and grow.
One of the most popular attractions among residents and visitors in Wading River is the Wildwood State Park. The park consists of 600, lush acres of undeveloped, forested land, and it features campsites and offers hiking, fishing, and many other great activities. Other great things to do in and around Wading River include the Long Island Blues Festival and the Polish Festival, which are hosted by the neighboring town of Riverhead.
