About Walden

With a population of about 7,000, Walden is the largest of three villages that make up the Town of Montgomery in Orange County, New York. Walden originated as an 18th century mill town situated along the Wallkill River. In the mid-19th century, the village was incorporated, and it gained its name from the most successful miller in the town, Jacob Walden. After the milling industry declined, Walden’s economy gained most of its strength from three separate knife manufacturers in the village that brought much prosperity to the area. One of the things that Walden is best known for in the Hudson Valley is the Thruway Markets hypermarket complex that is located in the village.

Walden is a beautiful village blessed by the stunning natural attractions that surround it. The most notable geographical feature in Walden is the Wallkill River, while the village also contains two waterfalls and lush, wooded hills that make up the Great Appalachian Valley. Although Walden is mostly a residential village, it also boasts two large, amazing parks: Bradley Park and Wooster Grove.
