The city of Watervliet is locate in Albany County in eastern New York and has a population of about 11,000 residents. The city lies on the east border of the Town of Colonie and is nicknamed “The Arsenal City” because it was once a major ammunition supplier for the U.S. during the War of 1812. Watervliet is also situated along the west bank of the Hudson River, opposite Troy. The city was first established when Kiliaen van Rensselaer, a diamond merchant from Amsterdam, bought a tract of land from the Mohawk Indians in 1630. In 1836, the settlement was incorporated as the Village of West Troy, when it was combined with Gibbonsville, Washington, and Port Schuyler. In 1896, the Village of West Troy became a city and was renamed Watervliet, which means, “flats by the water.” Today, Watervliet’s economy consists primarily of the manufacture of toothbrushes, paint, and storage tanks. The city is home to a U.S. arsenal that still functions and houses a collection of historic ordnance. Watervliet is also home to the Watervliet Civic Center, which offers a wide array of recreational opportunities to the city’s youth. The city also has a senior citizens center. Watervliet is a beautiful city that has much to offer to every visitor and resident.
