About White Plains

With a bustling population of 54,000, the city of White Plains is the county seat of Westchester County, New York. The city is situated along the Bronx and Hutchinson Rivers and was known to the Wappinger Indians as Quarropas, which means “White Marshes,” probably due to the heavy fogs in the area. White Plains was first established as a community within the town of Rye in 1735 and became a center for iron-mining. The area also served as a crossroads for several transportation lines. The city is home to the Elijah Miller House, which served as George Washington’s headquarters during the battle of Chatterton Hill during the American Revolutionary War.
