Woodstock is a beautiful unincorporated village and town that lies in Ulster County, southeastern New York. With a population of just over 6,000, Woodstock is located in the foothills of the southern Catskills near the Ashokan Reservoir. The town is also located only 10 miles northwest of Kingston and was developed after 1902 when Ralph R. Whitehead, inspired by William Morris and John Ruskin, established a handicraft community just north of Woodstock, which is known as Byrdcliffe. Today, Woodstock is a year-round resort community as well as a noted artists’ colony. In 1906, the summer school of the Art Students’ League of New York moved to Woodstock. Also, ever since artists such as George Bellows became attracted to the community, Woodstock has fluorished. Woodstock gave its name to the famous Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was a rock festival that was held in Bethel, New York, which is located in neighboring Sullivan County. The festival, which was originally intended to take place in Woodstock, was forced to move to Bethel due to a series of protests from the local townspeople. Some popular attractions in Woodstock include numerous art galleries and concert halls, where amazing works of art and music can be found. Woodstock is also known for being home to a a great number of artists, musicians, actors, and other notable people.
