About Yaphank

Yaphank is a beautiful community located in the southern part of the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. Yaphank has a population of about 5,000 residents and also lies on Long Island. The hamlet of Yaphank was first established during the mid 18th century when a man named John Homan built two mills along Carmen’s River, which still runs right through the middle of the town. The construction of these two mills led to the community’s first name, Millville. However, it was eventually renamed Yaphank, which was derived from the local Native American word “Yamphanke,” which means “bank of a river.”

Around 1875, Yaphank thrived with a economy composed of various mills, blacksmith shops, a printing office, a shoe shop, a meat market, a dressmaker, a general store, and much more. Today, however, about only have of these industries are still located in the community. Today, some of the businesses in Yaphank include delis, a pizza shop, a shooting supply corp., a skeet range, a bank, and a house moving company. The Brookhaven National Laboratory was also located in Yaphank.
