About Albemarle

With a population of about 16,000, the city of Albemarle is the county seat of Stanly County and is currently governed by Mayor Elbert L. “Whit” Whitley, Jr. There is archaeological evidence in Albemarle that the site of the modern day city was originally inhabited by small tribes of hunter-gatherers and Mound Builders, whose artifacts and settlements date back over 10,000 years. In the 1700’s, the area was settled by many Europeans of Dutch, Scots-Irish, English, and German descent. The City of Albemarle was officially incorporated in 1857 and named for the Duke of Albemarle, George Monck. Originally, Albemarle was based upon an agricultural economy, with a short lived gold rush in the nearby Uwharrie Mountains, but today, most of the city’s economy is based upon textile manufacturing.

Residents living in a home or apartment for rent can find that the city of Albemarle has a unique and rich history, and in 2005, Albemarle was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a National Main Street City. The city is filled with historical buildings, including the Freeman-Marks House, which was built in 1835, the Romanesque Revival Opera House / Starnes Jewelers Building, and the Isaiah W. “Buck” Snuggs House, all of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of these establishments are undergoing historical preservation and adaptive reuse projects. The Stanly County Museum, which is located in Albemarle, also preserves the rich history of the region. Albemarle also contains several beautiful parks, a soccer complex, and a ceramics facility. The city’s newest recreational facility is City Lake, a 75 acre park that joins Rock Creek Park, Chuck Morehead Memorial Park, Roosevelt Ingram Memorial Park, and Don Montgomery Memorial Park.
