The city of Asheboro is the county seat of the beautiful Randolph County in central North Carolina and has a population of about 22,000 residents. The city is nestled in the forested Uwharrie Mountains, about 25 miles south of Greensboro. The city was founded in 1796 on land that was once inhabited by the Keyauwee Indians, who built a prehistoric Native American burial ground that was excavated in 1936. Asheboro was named in honor of North Carolina Govenor Samuel Ashe. The city was originally a rural trade center, until the first railroad was established in the area in 1889, and several lumber plants were built. Today, Asheboro’s economy is comprised of large hosiery and apparel mills and upholstery manufacturing plants, as well as lumbering and the manufacture of wood products.
Two popular establishments in the Asheboro area include the North Carolina Zoological Park and the Seagrove potters’ colony. Some other attractions located in the area include the Asheboro Copperheads semi-pro baseball team, Caraway Speedway, Sunset Theatre, Downtown Asheboro, the American Classic Motorcycle Museum, NC Aviation Museum & Hall of Fame, and Richland Creek Zipline & Canopy Tours. Asheboro also holds numerous music festivals and events in its public parks several times each month.
