About Burlington

Located in Alamance County, north central North Carolina, the city of Burlington is situated between Greensboro and Durham. The city originated as maintenance shops that were built along the North Carolina Railroad in 1851. In 1866, the settlement was incorporated as the town of Company Shops, but it was rechartered as Burlington in 1887. Burlington’s economy suffered when the shops moved to Spencer in 1896, but small manufacturing plants moved into the area and helped re-establish the economy. Eventually, large scale textile operations were introduced. Today, Burlington’s economy is made up of textile and apparel industries, printing, publishing, and the manufacturing of electronic equipment, chemicals, plastics, and machinery.

The Alamance Battleground State Historic Site and Elon College are located in the area around Burlington. The Burlington Royals, LabCorp, Honda Aero, and Biscuitville are also based in Burlington. The city also offers great dining, shopping, and recreational opportunities.
