About Cherryville

Situated in Gaston County, the city of Cherryville has a population of about 6,000 residents. The fist people to settle in the area were those of German, Dutch, and Scots-Irish descent, who arrived here during the last half of the 18th century from the Colony of Pennsylvania. The settlement was originally known as White Pine when the village began to develop at a crossroads on the Old Post Road. In 1862, the Wilmington, Charlotte, and Rutherford Railroad extended a line through the area, and the town served as a water and coal stop. When a local resident started to plant cherry trees along the railroad, the train engineers began calling the town Cherryville, and the name stuck when it was incorporated in 1881.

For most of Cherryville’s history, agriculture was its main economic base, however, during the 1800’s, the textile industry was established. All of the textile plants have since closed. Today, one of Cherryville’s major employers is the Keystone Powdered Metal Company, as well as the Bradington-Young Furniture Company, R-Anell Incorporated, and Advanced Urethane Solutions, Inc. Some popular places of interest in Cherryville is the Cherryville Historical Museum, C. Grier Beam Truck Museum, the Noah Benjamin Kendrick House, and the Cherryville Country Cub, which contains a beautiful nine-hole golf course.
