The city of Clinton is located in Sampson County and has a population of about 9,000 residents. Clinton is the largest city and county seat in Sampson County. The city was named for Richard Clinton, a General during the American Revolution. The area where Clinton is currently located was first settled in 1740. The city was officially incorporated in 1852. Because of its geographical location in the center of the county, Clinton was developed as the major agricultural marketing center of the region.
Today, Clinton remains at the center of a still thriving farming region that grows vegetables, cotton, sweet potatoes, and tobacco, and raises swine and turkeys.
