About Edenton

The town of Edenton is the county seat of Chowan County, which is located in northeastern North Carolina on Albemarle Sound. Edenton was settled around 1660, which makes it the first permanent settlement in North Carolina. Although the town has gone through several name changes, in 1772, it finally settled on Edenton, which was a name taken in honor of Charles Eden, the first royal governor. Until 1743, Edenton was designated as the unofficial capital of the colony. Edenton served as a busy port town that exported plantation products, lumber, and fish.

Today, Edenton’s economy is based on agriculture, including groundnuts and cotton, as well as light manufacturing, lumbering, and boating. Edenton also has a rich history that includes historical figures such as Joseph Hewes, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and historical establishments including the Cupola and Iredell houses, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and the Chowan County Court House. There is also a bronze teapot marker in Edenton that commemorates the place where women of the town staged the British Edenton Tea Party in 1774.
