About Hamlet

The city of Hamlet is located in Richmond County, in southern North Carolina. Hamlet has a population of about 7,000 residents. Hamlet was once the largest city in Richmond County, but since the decline of the railroad industry, that title has been taken by the neighboring city of Rockingham. Now, the city is a junction of two major CSX railways heading toward Raleigh, Washington D.C., New York, and Florida. The Hamlet Passenger Station is served by Amtrak. The city was founded in the late 1800’s by Englishman John Shortridge, who established a woolen and saw mill along the Marks Creek. The city was incorporated in 1897, and railroad workers were the first people to settle here.

One of the most exciting and most celebrated festivals that take place in Hamlet is the Annual Seaboard Festival Day, which features arts and crafts, railroad car displays, divine food, live entertainment, and much more. The National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame is also located in Hamlet. Hamlet also has a rich music history; the city was the birthplace of the legendary Jazz innovator and saxophonist, John Coltrane. The city was also the birthplace of the first African-American Marine officer, Frederick C. Branch.
