About Henderson

The beautiful city of Henderson is the county seat of Vance County, which is located in northern North Carolina. Henderson is about 45 miles northeast of Raleigh. Henderson was first settled by people of German, Scottish, and Scotch-Irish descent in the early 1700’s, but the city wasn’t laid out until 1840, when it was named for Chief Justice Leonard Henderson, who was a member of North Carolina’s Supreme Court. Henderson’s economy is primarily based upon dairying, livestock raising, and feed. However, tobacco and the manufacture of textiles, home furnishings, glass containers, and mobile homes also contribute to the economy. Located only 6 miles north of Henderson is the Kerr Reservoir, which is part of the development of the Roanoke River basin. The city has a population of about 17,000 residents.

Since the Kerr Reservoir is located near Henderson, the city has developed into a popular recreation city. More than 1.6 people visit the reservoir each year, where visitors can take part in swimming, camping, picnicking, wind surfing, and fishing. There are also beautiful parks, hiking trails, and picnic areas scattered in and around the city. Fox Pond Park and the Aycock Recreational Complex both offer excellent recreational sports and services for the city’s residents.
