About Hickory

Situated in west-central North Carolina in Catawba County, the city of Hickory has a friendly population of about 38,000. Hickory is located near the Catawba River, which was dammed in order to form Lake Hickory, just east of the Appalachian foothills. The city is also conveniently located only 60 miles northwest of Charlotte. Hickory started to form after a store was established in the area in 1846 at the junction of two stagecoach trails. A tavern followed in the 1850’s, and it was built under a large hickory tree. When the railway was built in the area at the end of the decade, Hickory really began to develop, and the settlement was named Hickory Tavern when it was officially established in 1863. Later, in 1873, the name was changed to Hickory.

Industrial development in Hickory started when a small wagon manufacturing plant opened in 1880, and today, the city’s economy has diversified to include manufacturers of furniture, textiles, fiber-optic cable, hosiery, foam, springs, and mattresses. The Lenoir Rhyne College and Catawba Valley Community College make their home in Hickory. The Hickory Museum of Art is also located in the city. Most of the city’s great recreational activities can be found at the beautiful Lake Hickory, which formed after the Oxford Dam was built.
