About Hillsborough

The charming town of Hillsborough is the county seat of Orange County, which is located in north-central North Carolina. The town lies along the Eno River, conveniently located about 10 miles northwest of Durham. Hillsborough was laid out in 1754 on the former site of a Native American Village. The town has gone through several names including Orange, Corbinton, Childsburgh, and finally Hillsborough, which was taken in honor of Wills Hill, the earl of Hillsborough and then secretary of state for the colonies. Many Revolution-era buildings have been preserved in Hillsborough, some of which include the beautiful home of Governor Thomas Burke, which is named Heartsease. Hillsborough’s economy is comprised primarily of textile and furniture manufacturing, but the city is currently in the process of diversifying its manufacturing economy. One of the most popular attractions in the area is the Eno River State Park, which is located just to the east of Hillsborough. The city also offers great dining, shopping, and recreational activities, as well as interesting events celebrating the arts. Some of the exciting community events that are held in Hillsborough include the Hillsborough Hog Day, Last Fridays, the annual Occaneechi Saponi Spring Pow Wow Festival, and Walkable Hillsborough.
