About Kannapolis

The city of Kannapolis is situated in Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, and Rowan Counties and has a population of about 37,000 residents. The city’s name is a direct reference to the Cannon Mills Corporation and James William Cannon, but it is sometimes erroneously stated that the city got its name by combining the Greek words “kanna” and “polis” to create a name that translates to “City of Looms.” There are also many fine education institutions in Kannapolis, including Shaw University, and in the near future that North Carolina Research Campus, which is still in the process of being constructed. The city also provides for several convenient modes of transportation including the Concord Kannapolis Area Transit, which is a bus system that also goes by the name of Rider, the Charlotte Area Transit System, and an Amtrak railway system that connects Kannapolis to the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh, and Charlotte.

There are many interesting museums located in the Kannapolis area, some of which include the Curb Museum for Music and Motorsports, Dale Earnhardt Tribute, GI Memorial House Museum, History Room at the Kannapolis Branch of the Cannon Memorial Library, Textile Museum and Exhibition, and the Dale Trail. Many of the fun recreational and outdoor activities that can be found in the area include the Kannapolis County Club, Kannapolis Recreation Park, Village Park, and many of the other beautiful parks scattered throughout Kannapolis. The city is also home to the Kannapolis Intimidations, which is a baseball team that is the Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
