Located in Dare County on the eastern coast of North Carolina, the charming town of Kill Devil Hills has a population of about 6,000 residents. Of course, with the interesting name of “Kill Devil Hills,” there is an equally interesting story as to how the town acquired this name. During the colonial era, there were many shipwrecks on the coastline where the town is now located. Upon a shipwreck, the locals would scavenge the ship and take the rum they found and hide it behind the large sand dunes on shore. Coincidentally, these sand dunes are where the Wright brothers flew their fist plane. The locals stated that the rum was strong enough to “kill the devil,” therefore, the dunes where they hid the rum gained the nickname “Kill Devil Hills.” The town is also home to the Wright Brothers National Monument.
