The beautiful town of King is located on the border of Stokes and Forsyth Counties, and it has a population of about 6,000 residents. The town is considered part of the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area, which is located northwest of Winston-Salem. King’s Cabin was the original name of the settlement because Charles King and Francis King, some of the first settlers in the area, lived in a cabin located there for some time during the 1830’s. After they left the cabin, the building was used by locals as a landmark and reference point when giving directions. When a post office was established in the area in 1888, it was named for that reference point. When the railroad was built through the settlement a few years later, the name was shortened to King, and in 1983, the town of King was officially incorporated.
King is a popular town for recreational activities. There are two major parks located in King that offer all types of outdoor activities and recreational services: Central Park and Recreation Acres. The King Little League is another popular recreational opportunity that can be found in the town. Mitchell’s Nursery and Greenhouse, Inc. is another attraction in King. Some of the exciting attractions located in nearby communities include the Dan River Art Market, Hanging Rock State Park, Pilot Mountain State Park, and Home Creek Living History Farm.
