With a population of about 20,000 residents, the city of Lexington, which is the county seat of Davidson County, is located in central-western North Carolina. Situated only 20 miles south of Winston-Salem, the city is part of the Piedmont Triad region in North Carolina. Lexington, along with the nearby communities of Thomasville are slowly developing into bedroom communities for nearby cities including Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point. The city, which was first settled by Europeans in 1775, was named after Lexington, Massachusetts because it that city was the site of the first battle of the American Revolutionary War.
Lexington was incorporated in 1828, and in its early days it was a textile and furniture manufacturing center. Today, the city’s economy has diversified to include various industries. Nicknamed “Barbecue Capital of the World,” Lexington has a history and culture that is consistently entwined with barbecue. Since 1984, the city has been the host of the Lexington Barbecue Festival, which is one of the largest street festivals in the state. With over 20 barbecue restaurants located in the city, the “Lexington Barbecue Sandwich” has become the trademark item of the city’s barbeque culture. Other attractions located in Lexington include Bob Timberlake’s art gallery, Childress Vineyards, High Rock Lake, and the Bassmasters Classic.
