About Matthews

The charming town of Matthews is located in Mecklenburg County, and with a population of about 23,000, Matthews is a suburb of nearby Charlotte. The town originated as a small farming community during the 1800’s. When cotton farmers cleared nearly all of the land in the area, leaving only tree stumps, the community gained the name Stumptown. However, in 1825, the name was changed to Fullwood, in honor of John Fullwood, who operated an inn and became the first postmaster in the area. In 1874, the Carolina Central Railway Company established a railway that traveled through the town and traveled from Wilmington, North Carolina to Tennessee. After the railroad was established, the name of the town changed once again to Matthews, in honor of the director of the railroad, Edward Watson Matthews. The town was officially incorporated in 1879.

The farming economy of Matthews has since diversified to include various businesses, most of which are established in the town’s downtown district, which is the main center of commerce and activity. In addition to several large corporations being situated in the area, Matthews consists of many affluent housing developments that make up some of the most desirable communities to live in throughout the region. Despite the town’s growing population, it has made a conscious effort to preserve the town’s small town appearance and atmosphere.
