About Mebane

The city of Mebane is located in north-central North Carolina, in Alamance and Orange Counties. The city has a population of about 8,000 residents. Mebane is situated in the Piedmont region of the state and is conveniently located near the Greensboro and Raleigh-Durham International Airports. The city is about a three hour drive to both the mountains of Western North Carolina and the coastline of Eastern North Carolina. Over the past years, Mebane has experienced much economic and residential growth and development, making it one of the fastest growing areas in North Carolina. Mebane was a settlement that formed around a post office that was established in 1809. Eventually, the settlement was named in honor of Brigadier General Alexander Mebane, who was a member of the North Carolina Militia and a member of Congress. After the railroad arrived in 1855, the town was incorporated in 1881 as the town of Mebanesville. In 1883, the name was changed to Mebane, and in 1987, the town officially gained status as a city.

One of the largest employers in Mebane is the White Furniture Company, and other industries found in the city include bed springs and mattresses manufacturers. Tobacco also was once a main economic factor in Mebane. Much of the activity in the city takes place in Mebane’s downtown district, which hosts events such as the Sunfest, Clay Street After Work, Ladies Shop Hop, and much more.
