The town of Morehead City is primarily a seaport resort located in Carteret County, in eastern North Carolina. The town is situated on Bogue Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway, which is opposite to Beaufort, which is connected to Morehead City via bridge. The town was formed when John Motley Morehead, a former governor of North Carolina, bought land on the projected eastern terminus of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad. He believed that the region had great potential as an Atlantic Seaport. In 1858, the railroad arrived, and three years later it was officially incorporated as a town. Morehead City is the state’s only deepwater port north of Wilmington and is the center of much ocean activity. Over the past years, Morehead has developed into a popular resort community filled with large, summer cottages. The economy of the city is based on light manufacturing and tourism. Some popular destinations in Morehead City include Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon State Park, the Theodore Roosevelt State Natural Area, and the Croatan National Forest. The town is home to facilities for oceangoing, sportfishing, and commercial fishing craft. The Carteret Community College is also located in Mooresville City.
