The city of Morganton is the county seat of Burke County and lies in west-central North Carolina, along the Catawba River, only 20 miles west of Hickory. The city was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, who was a leader of the American Revolution, and the city’s original name was Morganborough. The first people settled in the area were the Catawba Native Americans, and European settlers began to settle in the area in the early 1700’s. In 1893, many people belonging to a group known as the Waldenses, who are religious refugees from the Italian Alps, settled in the area. Morganton’s economy consists primarily of the manufacture of furniture, textiles, shoes, chemicals, electronics, and clothing. The city is home to establishments including Western Piedmont community College, a museum that was once an old county courthouse used for sessions of the North Carolina Supreme Court, the Catawba River Greenway Park, Tuttle Educational State Forest, Lake Rhodhiss, South Mountain State Park, and Lake James State Park. Morganton is a beautiful and charming city that has something to offer to all of its residents and visitors.
