About Mount Airy

Situated in northern North Carolina, the city of Mount Airy has a population of about 9,000 residents and is located in Surry County. People first began to settle in the area in the 1730’s, and in 1885, Mount Airy was officially incorporated, and the city’s early charter that still exists is from 1889. In 1976, the Town of Mount Airy was changed to the City of Mount Airy. One of the city’s fist major establishments, a furniture factory, opened in 1895, and the city’s granite quarry was operational in 1889. Mount Airy was the birthplace and childhood home of American actor, Andy Griffith, and it is widely believed that Mount Airy was the inspiration for Mayberry, the setting of The Andy Griffith Show, which contained the same names of particular people and locations. This history has led to the celebration of the city’s annual “Mayberry Days,” which attracts visitors from around the world. The city was also the home of the famous Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng Bunker.
