The beautiful city of New Bern is the county seat of Craven County in eastern North Carolina and has a population of about 24,000 residents. New Bern is situated at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers and is about 35 miles northeast of Jacksonville. The area was first settled in 1710 by Freiherr Christophe von Graffenried of Bern, Switzerland, and it is the second oldest town in North Carolina. The town was officially incorporated in 1723, and served as colonial and state capital from 1746 to 1792. New Bern was once a thriving seaport that maintained successful trade with New England, England and the West Indies through Pamlico Sound. Today, it has developed into the service center for nearby resort cities and is at the center of an agricultural region that produces corn, tobacco, and cotton. The city’s economy also consists of manufacturers of chemicals, boats, wood products, and plumbing fixtures. Pepsi-Cola was invented here by pharmacist Caleb Bradham in 1898. The New Bern National Cemetery, Craven Community College, Firemen’s Museum, Bradham’s pharmacy, and Croatan National Forest are some of the popular attractions in New Bern.
