The area was first established in the early 19th century as an outpost and stop on the stagecoach line that connected Salisbury, North Carolina and Danville, Virginia. The settlement was originally named Wrights Crossroads, and the first home in the area was one belonging to the family of Reuben Reid, who was a local farmer, businessmen, and justice of the peace.
