About Sanford

The beautiful city of Sanford is located in Lee County, central North Carolina, and has a population of about 24,000 residents. Sanford is also the county seat of Lee County, which was formed from parts of three surrounding counties in 1907. When Lee County was first formed, the cities of Sanford and Jonesboro dominated the region. Instead of deciding which city would become the county seat of Lee County, the county’s new courthouse was placed directly between the two cities. However, as time passed on, Sanford grew to such an extent that it eventually enveloped the courthouse and merged with Jonesboro. The newly merged city kept the name of Sanford, but the district where former city of Jonesboro was located was given a subsidiary name of Jonesboro Heights. The Sanford region has a rich history relating to the American Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Throughout Sanford’s history, the city’s economy has consisted of the production of coal, brownstone, and brick. Today, the city remains a major producer of clay bricks, which has earned it the name “Brick Capital of the USA,” but the economy has also diversified to include the textile industry and major corporations including 3M, Caterpillar, Coty, Inc., and Tyson. Some of the popular attractions in Sanford include the Railroad House Museum, Deep River Sporting Clays, SanLee Park, Sanford Municipal Golf Course, and the Tobacco Road Golf Course. Some of the exciting events that take place in Sanford include the Sanford Pottery Festival, and musical concerts held at the Temple Theatre, Lee County Community Orchestra, and Heart of Carolina Jazz Society.
