About Selma

Situated in North Carolina’s Inner Banks region, the charming town of Selma is located in Johnston County, central North Carolina. The town has a friendly population of about 7,000 residents. The town was first established when lots surrounding a North Carolina Railroad depot were sold in 1867. Eventually, the town formed and became known as a railroad town. In 1837, the town of Selma was officially chartered. Recently, the town renovated its 1924 railroad depot, which now supports AMTRAK service, and the Mitchener Station, which was built in Selma in 1855, is the oldest surviving train station in the entire state. After a highway was built near Selma, the town experienced substantial growth and development, and there are many hotels and restaurants in the area that service people traveling along the highway. Much of the exciting activity in Selma takes place it its uptown district. Here, residents can find great shopping, dining, and entertainment experiences. Selma also holds several wonderful musical festivals throughout the year, including the American Music Jubilee, and the Railroad Days Festival. Residents and visitors can find unique antique and specialty shops throughout the city, as well as fine local and national restaurants.
