The town of Summerfield is located entirely in Guilford County and has a population of about 8,000 residents. Over the past years, Summerfield has developed from a rural farming area into a bedroom community and suburb of the nearby city of Greensboro. Although the Native Americans were the first people to settle in the area, the European settlers started to arrive in the Piedmont region during the 1700’s. Eventually, in 1769, a settler by the name of Charles Bruce bought 640 acres of land in the area that is now in the heart of Summerfield. The town was officially incorporated in 1996. During the town’s early days, it was strictly an agricultural center that grew crops including tobacco, corn, and raised cattle. Eventually, businesses and stores serving the agricultural industry arrived, further diversifying the economy. Due to Summerfield’s rich history, many of the buildings located in the town’s historic downtown district have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the most exciting events in Summerfield is the Annual Founders Day, where residents of Summerfield celebrate the history of their community and take part in games, eat great food, and cherish the local artwork and music.
