About Waynesville

The town of Waynesville is located in western North Carolina and is the county seat of Haywood County. Waynesville has a population of about 10,000 residents, making it the largest town in Haywood County. The town is also conveniently located 30 miles southwest of Asheville and is between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. Waynesville was founded in 1809 by Colonel Robert Love, an American Revolutionary War soldier, who donated land for many of the essential establishments needed to form a town. He decided to name the town after his former commander during the war, General Anthony Wayne. The town was eventually incorporated in 1871, and in 1995, Waynesville merged with the Town of Hazelwood to form the town it is today.

After the arrival of the railroad in 1884, a variety of businesses moved into Waynesville, creating a diversified economy. Much of the social life and commercial activity was centered in Waynesville’s downtown district and another district known as Frog Level. Toady, Frog Level is popular for being host to “The Whole Bloomin’ Thing” annual festival, which features locally grown and produced products and music, food, and entertainment. There are also many beautiful parks located in the area including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pisgah National Forest, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
