Trumbull County’s city of Cortland originated in 1874 with the construction of a railroad depot and by 1980 grew to have 5,000 residents. Today, Cortland is home to almost 7,000 residents and until 2005 was a dry city. Just 25 miles north of Youngstown on Route 11, Cortland is also connected by rail to Ohio’s larger cities. Because of Cortland’s central location, light industry growth is occurring, offering job openings to many local residents. Residents of an apartment or home in Cortland enjoy short commutes to Youngstown and Cleveland but the appeal of a quiet and safe neighborhood. Cortland’s location on Mosquito Reservoir and State Park adds to the city’s unique landscape.
Although Cortland is a relatively small city, with a unique charm that residents love, a growing retail shopping area, including a large variety of specialty shops is steadily being expanded. The city also maintains a wide range of city parks offering play fields and play grounds for the youth. Residents of a Cortland home or apartment for rent can send their children to school in the Lakeview school district which includes 2 elementary schools, a middle school, and high school. The city also hosts a branch of The Ohio State University. Every June, residents are treated to a Street Fair and parade.
