Home to 5,000 residents in Woods County along the Salt Fork Arkansas River, the town of Alva was established in 1893 as a land office for the Cherokee Outlet land run. Originally, Alva was the main base of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Since then, Alva has grown into a sizeable town based on a typical agricultural community. Most residents of an Alva house or apartment for rent engage in the agricultural industry, although major companies like Wal-Mart have factories in Alva as well. The Alva Regional Airport is open for local aviators, forcing most residents to fly out of other regional airports. Due to Alva’s location along the Oklahoma-Kansas border, the Wichita Mid-America Airport, 115 miles northeast of Alva is the most convenient airport.
Interestingly, the city is one of the few of its size in Oklahoma to still boast a daily newspaper, the Alva Review-Courier. Residents of an apartment or house rental in Alva also appreciate the city’s vast resources including the Alva Recreation Complex that provides both indoor and outdoor facilities for use around the year. Alva also hosts the Oklahoma Festival of Flight, Woods County Free Fair, and Nescatunga Arts & Crafts Festival annually. The Alva School District includes 3 elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school to serve the area’s K-12 educational needs. Further opportunity can be realized locally at the Northwest Technology Center and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
