Founded in 1901 when the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation was opened for settlement, Lawton has become a city of 93,000 residents 86 miles southwest of Oklahoma City along the I-44 corridor. The area’s large population is partly due to the large military community supporting the Fort Sill Military Reservation. Near the Wichita Mountains, Lawton is also home to large granite deposits and expansive cotton fields.
