A temporary village was established by the French in 1806, but it wasn’t until 1817 that the first permanent settlement was made on the south bank of the Verdigris River. In 1872, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad was extended to Muskogee expanding the town exponentially to its current position as Oklahoma’s 11th-largest city with 39,000 residents located 50 miles southeast of Tulsa.
