Capitol of the Creek Nation since the Civil War, the city of Okmulgee can be translated from the Creek language as “boiling or bubbling water.” This was based on the Creek’s spiritual belief that tornadoes would not strike on their location – and to this day, the myth has been true. Found 39 miles south of Tulsa via Route 75, Okmulgee is home to over 13,000 residents. The Okmulgee Municipal Airport provides a suitable airfield for the area’s general aviation needs.
