The Boundary Treaty of 1846 relocated the northern border of the United States to a latitude of 49 degrees, and Clackamas County therefore expanded. In 1853, an Act of Congress created the Washington Territory and thereby set the borders of the area. Since then, although the area of land hasn’t changed the population of the city of Clackamas has grown to 5,000 residents. Located 11 miles southeast of Portland, Clackamas serves as a vibrant and nostalgic suburb to the state’s largest city. Major employers include Tree of Life/Gourmet Foods Northwest, US Reddaway, Safeway, Fred Meyer, Clean-Pak International and Pacific Seafood. However, the I-205 nearby and a direct railroad into Portland provide easy transportation for those residents who commute into the larger city for work. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Clackamas enjoy the area’s various resources that remove the necessity of traveling into Portland. The Clackamas Town Center provides an extensive list of over 150 retailers. Camp Withycombe, a military base, is also located in Clackamas.
With a splendid view of Mount Hood, residents of a Clackamas house or apartment for rent can enjoy jogging or picnicking in one of the local parks, including Barton Park, Boones Ferry Marina, Carver Park, Eagle Fern Park, Feyrer Park, Hebb Park, Metzler Park, and Hoodland Park. The city of Clackamas sponsors a 5-campus school system that includes 3 elementary schools and a single middle and high school. The Milwaukie Center for Senior Citizens plans a variety of events and excursions for the area’s older population. Additionally, the Clackamas County Fair and North Clackamas Aquatic Park both attract many residents and visitors alike.
