Despite a convenient location on the I-99, Altoona is distant from most of Pennsylvania’s major cities. Ninety-seven miles east of Pittsburgh, the city has a population just under 50,000 residents. Created by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849, Altoona was developed around the railroad industry and therefore, the city is currently recovering from industrial decline and urban decentralization. However, Altoona is still the home of the Sheetz Convenience Store Chain headquarters. Altoona is also a hub for the Norfolk Southern Railroad's Pittsburgh Line. Residents of an Altoona house or apartment for rent can use the extensive highway system or can catch the Amtrak train or AMTRAN bus for regional transportation. Altoona-Blair County Airport provides area residents with commercial flights to both Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. Altoona is home to the Altoona Curve baseball team, an AA Minor League team for the Pittsburgh Pirates Major League team. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Altoona enjoy the city’s small-town feeling despite large population. The Altoona Symphony Orchestra and Railroaders Memorial Museum are both popular leisure activities. Other fascinating Altoona attractions include the Horseshoe Curve, the Railroaders Memorial Museum, the Mishler Theatre, the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and the Jaffa Mosque.
