Twenty-five miles westward, along the Ohio River, the town of Monaca is home to 7,000 residents. First settled and named Phillipsburg, the town’s name was changed in 1892 to honor the original Native Americans who occupied the area prior to westward expansion. Historically, the area produced large quantities of porcelain ware, glass, tile, tubing, drawn steel, and wire, although the Monaca area has been reduced to a pure suburban community since then.
