Built alongside the Schuylkill River, Norristown is 20 miles north of downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is home to almost 31,000 residents. Located in an agriculturally rich region, Norristown once hosted a spread of farming and manufacturing that thrived in the mid 1900s but experienced a gradual decline in the 1980s to almost nothing today. The Norristown Transportation Center, along the river, functions as a end-terminus for the Norristown High Speed rail line and station for the SEPTA commuter rail’s route R6. Main Street Station and Elm Street Station provide alternative boarding locations to allow the majority of Norristown’s residents within walking distance of a train. Many residents of an apartment or home rental in Norristown choose to utilize the trains as commuting into Philadelphia by road involves multiple changes between the I-276 and I-476.
Besides the Philadelphia daily newspapers, the Norristown Times Herald also provides residents with daily news. River Front Park is especially popular because of the beautiful views and sweeping vistas of the river flowing by. Many Norristown residents enjoy walking along the river’s banks in the early morning or just before sunset. McCann Park, John F. Kennedy Park, and Plymouth Country Club afford residents of a Norristown house or apartment for rent with additional recreational facilities. Simmons Park is the largest park in Norristown and is located in the center of the city. Elmwood Park Zoo is also one of Norristown’s largest attractions. Norristown Area School District serves the students in grades K through 12 with exceptional educations that rival those of nearby private schools. Concerts at Bandshell and New Year Fireworks are popular community events that have become a ritual for many residents.
