Part of lower Carbon County in the Lehigh Valley, Palmerton’s roots are in large-scale coal mining and production. The area was first populated in 1898 when New Jersey Zinc Company set-up a large plant to take advantage of the zinc and anthracite coal mines nearby. Palmerton’s 6,000 residents have experienced rapid growth in the last decade as many New Jersey residents are moving to Palmerton for its more affordable housing, effectively turning Palmerton into a suburban neighborhood instead of industrial community. Residents of a Palmerton house or apartment for rent enjoy the town’s close proximity to Newark, New Jersey, 91 miles east, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 82 miles south.
The famous and historical Appalachian Trail crosses the Lehigh River in Palmerton. Accordingly, the former town jail has been refurbished and converted into a hostel for Appalachian Trail hikers. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Palmerton are within close distance to the Blue Mountain Ski Area, as well. Besides skiing, many recreational opportunities are available closer to home with Palmerton Borough Park and Blue Ridge Country Club nearby. The Palmerton Area School District oversees K-12 education in the town and runs 4 schools, 2 of them elementary, to serve the community.
